Abstract

Background: A number of pharmacological agents are available for use as antithyroid agents. Fragaria vesca a plant extract widely available can be evaluate for its Antithyroid activity.

Methods: Fragaria vesca can be used as anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-allergic and anti-diabetic. This plants extract is also shown antithyroid activity. Hyperthyroidism induced rats were experimented by administering Thyroxine orally for 14 days. Hyperthyroid wistar male rats were treated with oral doses of 2 mg, 4 mg and 6 mg of Fragaria vesca extract for a period of 21 days. Methimazole 0.04% w/v for 21 days was used as the standard.

Results: This study had shown that T3 and T4levels successfully reduced with increase in the dose of Fragaria Vesca extract when compare to the standard Methimazole.

Conclusion: The antithyroid activity of Fragaria Vesca is clearly evident to decrease the levels of T3 and T4 levels. Further molecular studies can be conducted to determine the exact mechanism of action for its anti-thyroid activity.
