PREVALENCE OF USE OF VARIOUS RETENTION APPLIANCES AMONG DENTAL STUDENTS

Abstract
AIM: This study aimed at comparing the frequency and distribution of clinical usage of various orthodontic retention appliances for orthodontic treated cases.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: From the patient data, records of who underwent fixed orthodontic treatment. A total of 254 patients who underwent fixed orthodontic therapy and were in need of retainer. The ethical approval was obtained from the scientific review board of Saveetha dental college to review patient records details. Descriptive statistics were performed for the obtained results and comparison between groups were done using Chi square tests.
RESULT: Among the samples examined, 46%(68 females and 49 females) had Essix retainer, 21.2% (28 female and 26 male) had been given Beggs wrap-around retainer 18.8% (29 female and 19 male) had been given Hawleys retainer, 13.7%(22 female and 13 male) had fixed lingual or palatal retainer. 171 patients had there retainer in upper arch and 83 patients had there retainer in lower arch.
CONCLUSION: We concluded that essix retainers are more commonly preferred and it is affordable and esthetic.
