Abstract

Introduction: A tooth extraction is removal of a tooth. Ideal type of tooth extraction relies on the tooth’s shape, size and location in the oral cavity.

Materials and methods: This was a retrospective cross sectional study conducted among the patients The data was collected by reviewing the patients records from Dental Information Archiving Software (DIAS). Only the patients indicated to extract 1 st molars were included in the study and  patients indicated to extract other teeth other than 1 st molar were excluded.200 cases were reported in the specified time. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS software Version 20.0. Descriptive statistics and the relation between variables was obtained using the chi square test.

Result: From their study it was found that the majority of the males had undergone extraction compared to females.64%of the patients were males and 35% of the patients were females.Caries was the main reason for the extraction in the 1st mandibular molar.59% of the patients had caries

Discussion: The first permanent molar plays an vital role in the masticatory function by helping the implementation and the maintenance  of the occlusion. From the study done by Bansal et al it was noted that primary maxillary and mandibular first molars were more affected due to caries than second molars

Conclusion: From this study we can conclude that the main cause for the extraction of the 1st mandibular molar is due to caries .The ideal age to extract 1st mandibular molar is 8-10 years in order to achieve good clinical outcome. The association of the causes of removal of tooth and age of the patients showed a significant value.
