TheiphytochemistryiofitheigenusiCarallumaiisicharacterizedibyimanyipregnaneiglycosides.iOtherichemicaliconstituentsiincludeiflavones,iglycosides,imegastigmaneiglycosides,isaponinsiandiseveraliflavonoids.iNaturaliantioxidantsiplayiaikeyiroleiinihealthimaintenanceiandipreventioniofitheichroniciandidegenerativeidiseases,isuchiasiatherosclerosis,icardiaciandicerebraliischemia,icarcinogenesis.Antioxidantsiexertitheiriactivityibyiscavengingithei‘free,oxygeniradicals’itherebyigivingiriseitoiaifairlyi‘stableiradical’.iTheifreeiradicalsiareimetastableichemicalispecies,iwhichitenditoitrapielectronsifromitheimoleculesiinitheiimmediateisurroundings.iTheseiradicalsiifinotiscavengedieffectivelyiinitime,itheyimayidamageicrucialibioimoleculesilikeilipids,iproteinsiincludingithoseipresentiiniallimembranes,imitochondriaiand,itheiDNAiresultingiiniabnormalitiesileadingitoidiseaseiconditions,TheiRSAiactivityiofisecondaryimetaboliteiwasideterminediusingiDPPHiassay.ABTSiradical,scavengingiactivityiofitheiextractiwasidetermined.TheiabilityitoireduceiferriciionsiwasimeasurediusingitheiFRAPassay.TRAP(TotaliRadical- TrappingiAntioxidantiParameter)iAssay was also performed.
