Abstract

TheiphytochemistryiofitheigenusiCarallumaiisicharacterizedibyimanyipregnaneiglycosides.iOtherichemicaliconstituentsiincludeiflavones,iglycosides,imegastigmaneiglycosides,isaponinsiandiseveraliflavonoids.iTheiappetiteisuppressingipropertiesiofiC.ifimbriataicouldibeiattributeditoitheipregnaneiglycosides,iwhichiareipresentiinitheiplantispeciesibelongingitoitheiApocynaceaeifamilyi(Kunertietial.,i2008).iElevenipregnaneiglycosidesihaveibeeniisolatedifromitheiplantiextractifromiwhich,ifouri(compoundsi10–13)icontainiainoveligenin. Amongitheigreativarietyiofisecondaryicompoundsifoundiiniplants,iphenolicsianditerpenoidsirepresentitheimainiantimicrobialiagentsicurrentlyiknown.iOthericompoundsisuchiasialkaloids,iflavonoids,itanninsiandicoumarinihaveibeeniidentifiediasiantimicrobialiagents. Antifungaliactivityiofitheistemisampleiextractiresiduesiwereitestediagainstifungiinamely,IMicrosporumicanis,iFusariumioxysporumiandiAspergillusiniger.iDiscidiffusionimethodiwasiadoptediforiantifungaliassay and bioassay and Muller/Hintoniagariplates used for antibacterial assay.
