A Study On Economic Impact Of Fish Processing Industries On Coastal Communities In Thoothukudi District

Abstract

The fish processing industry plays an important role in the economic development of coastal regions by generating employment, income and livelihood opportunities for fishing communities. Thoothukudi District, with its extensive coastline and significant marine fisheries sector, has considerable potential for fish processing and related activities. This study examines the economic impact of fish processing industries on coastal communities in Thoothukudi District. The study focuses on the contribution of fish processing activities to employment generation, household income, livelihood diversification and socio-economic development among coastal communities. It also analyses the major problems faced by workers, fishermen and other stakeholders associated with the fish processing sector. The study proposes to collect primary data from selected coastal communities through a structured questionnaire and interviews. Secondary information will be collected from government reports, fisheries departments, research publications and other relevant sources. Appropriate statistical tools will be used to analyse income levels, employment patterns, occupational changes and the economic benefits derived from fish processing activities. The study is expected to identify the extent to which fish processing industries contribute to improving the economic well-being of coastal households. It will also highlight challenges such as seasonal employment, fluctuations in fish availability and prices, inadequate infrastructure, working conditions and marketing constraints.
