Prevalence of Anterior Open Bite and Its Association with Various Habits in Pediatric Patients undergoing Orthodontic Therapy

Abstract

Aim: To find the prevalence of Anterior open bite and its association with various habits in pediatric patients undergoing orthodontic therapy.


Background: Open bite is the term used to describe neither the anterior nor posterior teeth come into contact. An anterior open bite malocclusion is the hardest to correct. A mix of skeletal, dental, and habitual factors are responsible for the complexity of the open bite.In developing children and teenagers, oral habits are a common etiological cause for anterior open bites.


Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective study in which the Data of patients who were diagnosed with open bite within an age range of 3-17 years in the department of Orthodontics at a private teaching hospital, Chennai from June 2021 and June 2022 was collected by reviewing patient’s records and analyzed. The collected data (n=220) was compiled, reviewed, tabulated and imported to SPSS statistical software to analyze the data.


Results and Discussion: In 106(48.18%) out of the Study population, the majority of 13-17 year olds have open bite. Open bite is seen in 112 (50.91%) male patients and females 108(49.09%) implying open bite is equally prevalent in both genders.Majority of the patients had thumb sucking habit 72(33.7%)


Conclusions: From the study it can be concluded that the prevalence of open bite was 11.7% among the study population, with equal gender predilection and it is more common between 13-17 years old as they seek for orthodontic correction.
