Development and Validation of a Survey Questionnaire on Work-Life Balance of Nurses

Abstract

Purpose: The main purpose of the study is to develop and validate the questionnaire which is designed to assess the variables affecting the Work-Life Balance (WLB) of women nurses employed by government as well as private hospitals.


Design/ Methodology: The questionnaire was developed from 8 key factors (Working Environment and Staff welfare, Workload, Attendance, and leaves, Remuneration, Training, and Career Advancement, Constitutionalism in the workplace, Job satisfaction, Job security, and Organization commitment, Family, Friends, and societal relationship, Self‐Care, and Impact of COVID‐19 pandemic on nurse work ‐ life) derived from review of literature, consisting of Likert scale questions and 6 open end questions excluding the personal and work-related demographic factors.6 experts on the topic reviewed the questionnaire for content validity and face validity. 47 women nurses of Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka, India from government as well as private hospitals were taken for the pilot study. The data collected with the help of the questionnaire was tested for reliability and validity using statistical tools. The statistical software SPSS 22.0 was used to conduct the analysis.


Findings/Results: The content validity scores were S-CVI/Average = 0.95 and S-CVI/UA, indicating that the content of the questionnaire was of relevance. Cronbach’s Alpha for each domain (Working Environment and Staff welfare, Workload, Attendance, and leaves, Remuneration, Training, and Career Advancement, Constitutionalism in the workplace, Job satisfaction, Job security, and Organization commitment, Family, Friends, and societal relationship, Self‐Care, and Impact of COVID‐19 pandemic on nurse work ‐ life)was0.97, 0.98, 0.99, 0.98, 0.99, 0.97, 0.93, and 0.98, respectively.


Originality/Value: The scale developed in this study helps to find the level of work-life balance of the nurses. The tool developed includes questions related to the COVID pandemic which can be used for assessing work-life balance during any future pandemic or epidemic.
