Abstract

Background: Genetically Modified (GM) crops provide an exciting and effective solution to global food requirements. However, the adoption of GM crops for agricultural practices has been shrouded in controversies. Such controversies have often had a negative impact on public perception and policy adoption regarding GM crops.

Scope and approach: The presented work describes a pilot survey from Indian consumers regarding their knowledge and attitude towards the same. The work was carried out via an online questionnaire-based survey across India with 421 participants.

Key findings and conclusion: It was revealed that 32% of the participants self-reported that their knowledge regarding the principles of GM crop production was in depth, while 18% stated that they were unaware of the basics. The major source of information on the topic was reported to be from books and periodicals (44.9%), followed by the internet (41.8%). The participants also recorded their reason for their positive and negative outlooks toward the technology respectively. It was revealed that despite having some correct information on the topic, certain misinformation and theoretical concerns may play a key role in driving the GM discussion among Indian consumers.
