Abstract

Background: The success of root canal therapy depends on the locations of all the canals, thorough debridement and proper sealing. At times the clinicians are challenged with variations in morphology of the root canal. The aim of this study is to assess the number of canals in permanent 1st mandibular molar in patients reporting to university dental hospitals.

Materials and methods: A total of 250 patients were included in the present study. Demographic details like age, gender, teeth number, number of root canals of all patients were recorded. All the data was entered on the excel sheet. Data was analysed by the SPSS software version.

Results: From this study we observed that 55.20% (11-15) years were the most prevalent age of the patients who did root canal treatment in mandibular Ist molar. 31.20% right mandibular first molar (46) showed a higher tendency of treating root canal when compared to left mandibular first molar (36) which is more common among 11-15yrs of age.

Conclusion: Within the limitations of the study, the 42.80% female population seems to have a slightly higher tendency of three canals in the mandibular first molar.  The root canal treatment requires proper knowledge of variations in root canal morphology in order to recognise, disinfect and seal all portals of exit.
